Why do we climb them?
Because they’re there.
Ever catch yourself looking around our valley and thinking about those mountains around us? How about getting to stand on top of them?
This is your chance to really play in your own backyard. What an accomplishment it will be for you to be able to know and say that you have visited all of Big Bear’s peaks AND that you did it in one year!
Free!
That's right. No cost. Just come join us and be part of an exclusive “club” of outdoor enthusiasts that will do something in Big Bear that most locals would never even believe they could do.
Fitness
These loosely organized events are open to anybody, but we caution that they require a certain level of fitness. If you can currently hike 5 miles on rough terrain, you should be able to attempt the first 5 hikes. As you build fitness by hiking, you can prepare for Sugarloaf and San Gorgonio. See the page on hiking for some other hike ideas to get ready.
Dates & Directions
We will start with our first peak on March 29 and conclude with the “biggie” San Gorgonio on August 23, which is the day BEFORE our local Olympian Ryan Hall will race in Beijing. (We want to log all these miles on the Move a Million Miles for Ryan Hall campaign, so if you aren't now logging your miles then get over to the site and get moving!)
Directions will be posted a couple weeks before each hike. Click the "hike info" listed with each hike.
How do we record each peak?
There are punch cards available for pickup at the PowerMyHealth.com office and at the Big Bear Discovery Center.
To be recognized as a finisher of the “Seven Summits of Big Bear”, you will need to turn in your completed punch card to show you have been at the top of all seven peaks.
Ask for a "Seven Summits punchcard" and then go bag those peaks!
What if I can't make a hike?
There will be “punches” at the top of each peak for about a two weeks on either side of the official hike date. If you can’t make the date, just go some time within the month that a punch will be at the summit and log that hike!
Register
Hike details including meeting places, what to bring, directions, parking and carpool information will be notified via email on the Yahoo group for ActiveBigBear, so you must sign up as a member to receive these messages (also free). What is ActiveBigBear?
Note: you can access the messages sent to the ActiveBigBear group by simply going to the club page. All of our events and most messsages are public, and it is only necessary to join if you wish to receive messages and last-minute updates by email. The "hike info" pages linked to above are published aprroximately 2 weeks before the hike date and may not be updated with last-minute changes.
Gear Discounts and other perks
We have had some offers to Seven Summits hikers for gear discounts and other perks that you can earn as you punch your punchcard and show it at retail locations. Learn more »
